“Drops” Will Shows Dates Can Be A Real Horror Film | Coming Soon
If you ask a lot of singles, they may treat their first date situation as a horror movie. We’ve seen a few films that take dating anxiety in interesting directions, whether the man is a psychopath with cannibalistic tendencies (the excellent “Fresh”) or something is seriously wrong with the woman (the Australian “The Loved Ones”). To this we can add the app movies, or if you will, “Tinder horror” (or whatever other App they are using) like “Bad Match,” in which Lily Simmons plays someone she shouldn’t have met, or the recently released “Succubus,” about a divorced man who swipes right and encounters someone who is apparently not human.
“Drop,” which will hit screens in April, takes the fear of dating in a different direction, with a girl who receives threatening messages during a date and has to perform various tasks so that terrible things don’t happen to the people close to her.
With one of the most prominent horror directors of recent years, experienced producers, and a promising cast, we could be getting one of the successful guilty pleasure films of 2025.
Date Night With A Twist: The Plot Of Drop
“Drop” begins with a frame story that we know very little about from movies: a widow single mother named Violet (Meghann Fahy, Emmy nominee for “The White Lotus,” and also the horror comedy “Your Monster”) goes on her first date in years, filled with fears. “When she discovers that her date Henry (Brandon Sklenar, “1923”, Midway,” “Emily the Criminal,” “It’s Ends with Us”) is a handsome guy who looks charming, she relaxes a little. It looks even better, considering the date is at a fancy restaurant, which looks like it came from an annoying Instagram influencer’s profile.
Everything changes when she receives threatening messages via Apple’s AirDrop file transfer service, which the movie tends to use more than just a hidden advertisement. At first, it’s just a few weird memes, and her date is pretty sure it’s a prank by some bored kids. Later, explicit threats arrive – such as a creepy guy showing up at her house threatening to kill her son (Jacob Robinson) and the younger sister who’s been hired to be his babysitter (Violet Beane, “Truth or Dare“ and the TV series “The Flash“ and “God Friended Me”) if she doesn’t complete simple tasks like murdering her date.
Here is the trailer of “Drop”, released a few days ago:
From the trailer, it looks like the film has the potential to be in the beloved “Whodunit?“ subgenre because the messages are apparently sent by someone inside the restaurant (You must be close enough to someone to send him AirDrops). It is said the producers got the idea while they were at a restaurant and started receiving random AirDrops from someone in the restaurant, which led them to spend the entire dinner trying to solve the mystery. They couldn’t figure out who was behind the messages, but the film will hopefully give us some answers, partly since the words “Everyone’s A Suspect” are on the poster.
Who Else Is In The Cast Of Drop?
The cast of “Drop“ also includes Ed Weeks (“The Mindy Project,” “LA To Vegas,”), Travis Nelson (“The Lake,” “Tucker & Dale vs. Evil”), Jeffrey Self (“Search Party,” “The Horror of Dolores Roach”) and Fiona Brown (“Vikings: Valhalla,” “Disenchanted”).
Christopher Landon And Blumhouse. What Could Possible Go Wrong?
Expectations for “Drop“ rise when we see who took the reins here. The director is Christopher Landon, who has written and directed several excellent horror comedies in recent years (“Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse,“ two “Happy Death Day“ films, and “Freaky”). As we recall, Landon was supposed to direct “Scream 7,“ but for still unclear reasons, he dropped out of the project and began working on “Drop“ immediately after.
The screenplay was written by the duo Gillian Jacobs and Chris Roach (“Truth or Dare,” “Fantasy Island”) and is produced by Blumhouse (“Megan,” “The Black Phone,” “Get Out,” “The Invisible Man,” “Speak No Evil,” “Split,“ and more) and Platinum Dunes (“A Quiet Place”). The executive producers are Jason Blum and Michael Bay, who, in my opinion, is a very tedious director (“Armageddon,” “Pearl Harbor,“ “Transformers”) but a skilled producer.
Hitchcock And De Palma On The Digital Age
Christopher Landon noted that the emphasis in the film will be on the characters. “It’s a character-driven movie. The film is mainly about a woman who is really struggling with her dark past and has to overcome some obstacles that seem insurmountable,“ he told “Empire,“ after the trailer of “Drop“ dropped. “It’s very much about a woman who is really struggling with a pretty dark past, and having to overcome some insurmountable odds. For me, that’s always the most exciting kind of movie — when you’re with a character that you really fall in love with.”
“The real hook of it is, the anonymity of it. It’s untraceable”, Landon added. “I immediately was taken by the simplicity of the idea. I loved how modern – and yet old-school and Hitchcock – it felt.“
Landon noted that the film is also a “love letter” to the works of Brian De Palma (“Carrie,” “Dressed to Kill,” “The Untouchables”).
It’s A Date: When Will Drop Movie Coming Out?
“Drop” will hit theaters worldwide on the 11th of April. Universal Pictures will distribute The film worldwide as part of the collaboration between the film giant and Blumhouse since 2011.
So it’s true that “Drop“ comes out about two months after Valentine’s Day, but it still seems like a great film for horror fans who like movies with a romantic aspect or even the potential to be a film for a couple’s date at the cinema. After all, what could bring potential lovers closer than watching a movie showing that dating can be much worse than what they go through themselves?
